Telecardiology in Rural Healthcare Settings

Abstract

BackgroundCardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remain the leading cause of mortality worldwide, accounting for nearly one-third of global deaths. Rural populations often face significant barriers to accessing specialized cardiac care due to geographic isolation, shortages of cardiologists, inadequate healthcare infrastructure, and transportation challenges. Telecardiology has emerged as an innovative healthcare solution that utilizes telecommunications technologies to provide remote cardiac consultations, diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment.ObjectiveThis study evaluates the effectiveness of telecardiology in improving access to cardiac care, clinical outcomes, patient satisfaction, and healthcare efficiency in rural healthcare settings.MethodsA mixed-method cross-sectional study was conducted among 320 patients, healthcare providers, and healthcare administrators from rural healthcare centers implementing telecardiology services. Quantitative data were collected through patient records, satisfaction surveys, and healthcare utilization metrics. Qualitative interviews explored perceptions regarding telecardiology adoption and effectiveness.ResultsTelecardiology significantly improved specialist access (91.3%), reduced referral delays (84.7%), increased patient satisfaction (88.9%), and enhanced early detection of cardiovascular conditions (82.5%). Hospital transfer rates decreased by 36.4%, while average consultation waiting times were reduced from 18 days to 4 days (p < 0.001).ConclusionTelecardiology substantially improves access to cardiovascular care in rural settings, enhances patient outcomes, and reduces healthcare disparities. Expansion of telecardiology infrastructure may contribute significantly to achieving equitable healthcare delivery worldwide.
