LONG-TERM STENT PATENCY RATES IN DIABETIC PATIENTS UNDERGOING PCI

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a major risk factor for coronary artery disease (CAD) and reduces long-term stent patency following percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). This quantitative cohort study evaluates long-term patency rates of drug-eluting stents (DES) versus bare-metal stents (BMS) over a 5-year follow-up among 1,240 diabetic patients undergoing PCI. Results show significantly higher restenosis and target lesion revascularization (TLR) among poorly controlled diabetics (HbA1c ≥ 8.0) and those receiving BMS. DES demonstrated a 5-year patency rate of 81.4%, while BMS showed 53.2%. The study highlights the need for glycemic control and the superiority of next-generation DES in diabetic subgroups.
