Background: Climate change is one of the most significant global health challenges of the 21st century. Rising temperatures, changing precipitation patterns, extreme weather events, and environmental degradation are increasingly affecting human health worldwide. The impacts range from heat-related illnesses and infectious diseases to mental health disorders and food insecurity. Objective: This study examines the effects of climate change on human health, identifies vulnerable populations, and explores mitigation and adaptation strategies to reduce health-related consequences. Methods: A cross-sectional analytical study combined literature review findings with survey data collected from 750 healthcare professionals, environmental scientists, and public health experts. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical methods to assess perceptions of climate-related health risks. Results: Approximately 92.4% of respondents agreed that climate change significantly affects human health. Heat-related illnesses (88.6%), respiratory diseases (84.3%), vector-borne diseases (79.5%), food insecurity (76.8%), and mental health disorders (72.1%) were identified as major consequences. Vulnerable populations included children, elderly individuals, low-income communities, and people with chronic illnesses. Conclusion: Climate change poses a substantial threat to global health. Strengthening public health infrastructure, promoting climate-resilient healthcare systems, and implementing sustainable environmental policies are essential to reducing future health risks.
Climate change refers to long-term alterations in temperature, precipitation, and weather patterns resulting primarily from human activities such as fossil fuel combustion, deforestation, industrialization, and agricultural practices. Since the Industrial Revolution, global temperatures have increased significantly due to rising greenhouse gas concentrations.
The consequences of climate change extend beyond environmental concerns and increasingly affect human health. Extreme weather events, rising temperatures, deteriorating air quality, altered disease patterns, food insecurity, and displacement of populations have emerged as major public health challenges.
According to the World Health Organization, climate change is expected to cause approximately 250,000 additional deaths annually between 2030 and 2050 due to malnutrition, malaria, diarrhea, and heat stress.
