Abstract

Health literacy is increasingly recognized as a fundamental determinant of health outcomes and disease prevention practices. It encompasses an individual's ability to access, understand, evaluate, and apply health-related information to make informed healthcare decisions. Limited health literacy is associated with poor health behaviors, inadequate utilization of preventive services, delayed diagnosis, increased hospitalization rates, and higher healthcare costs. This review examines the relationship between health literacy and disease prevention practices, highlighting its role in promoting healthy lifestyles, vaccination uptake, chronic disease management, screening participation, and public health preparedness. The article further explores factors influencing health literacy, barriers to effective communication, and evidence-based interventions aimed at improving health literacy among diverse populations. Strengthening health literacy is essential for achieving equitable healthcare delivery and sustainable public health outcomes.

Introduction

Health literacy has emerged as a critical component of modern healthcare systems. It refers to the capacity of individuals to obtain, process, and understand basic health information and services required to make appropriate health decisions.

The increasing complexity of healthcare systems, growing prevalence of chronic diseases, and widespread availability of health information through digital platforms have made health literacy more important than ever. Individuals with adequate health literacy are more likely to engage in preventive health behaviors, adhere to treatment recommendations, and effectively navigate healthcare services.

This review explores the significance of health literacy in disease prevention and discusses strategies for enhancing health-related knowledge and behaviors across populations.
